No. 30: Nina Ireland

Donor’s background: Ms. Ireland was the great-granddaughter of the banker Charles Lincoln Ireland, who owned Birmingham Slag, an Alabama producer of construction materials. The company eventually became Vulcan Materials Company under the direction of her father, Charles William Ireland.

Ms. Ireland, who died in 2010 at the age of 67, bequeathed $48-million from her estate to the University of California at San Francisco to benefit pulmonary-medicine research and care. She was a longtime donor to the university. Her gifts to the institution spanned three decades, enabling the university to establish the Nina Ireland Laboratory of Developmental Biology, the Nina Ireland Distinguished Professorship in Pulmonary Medicine, and the Nina Ireland Distinguished Professorship in Child Psychiatry.
