Amount donated in 2011: $27-million
Beneficiary: Broad Foundations
Donors’ background: Mr. Broad is founding chairman of KB Home, a homebuilder, and of SunAmerica, a financial-services company.
Mr. Broad, 78, and his wife, Edythe, 75, gave $27-million to the Broad Foundations. The foundations support civic programs, contemporary-art museums, efforts to improve elementary and secondary public-school education, and medical and scientific research.
The Broad Foundations awarded several grants in 2011, including $40-million to endow the Broad Prize for Urban Education, an annual award the Broads created a decade ago to recognize urban school districts with high student achievement and success in improving achievement gaps between students of differing socioeconomic backgrounds. The prize money honors the school districts, but the money provides college scholarships to graduating high-school seniors from the winning school systems.
The grant maker also awarded $25-million to Teach for America to establish an endowment.
