A Joyous Reminder of Poland's History of Jewish Culture
On a Saturday night here, Jewish singers from America and Israel celebrated the end of the Sabbath with songs that brought Jews and gentiles to their feet.
In the sumptuous hall of the refurbished Tempel Synagogue, with its brilliant chandeliers and stained glass, the cantors performed traditional Hebrew melodies of struggle and hope — melodies that before the Holocaust used to echo from the city's streets every week.
