Break for Chile Gifts Passes House

The House of Representatives has approved a bill, HR 4783, to allow people who donate money to help victims of last month’s earthquake in Chile to claim itemized deductions on their 2009 tax returns rather than waiting to do so on their 2010 forms. The provision would apply to gifts made through April 15, 2010.

The bill also would extend until April 15 a similar tax benefit that had applied to donations for Haitian earthquake relief efforts; the Haiti benefit expired on February 28.
