During the day, workers at Martha’s Table help Washington’s homeless.

But on Tuesday and Wednesday nights each summer, they take a break from their often-stressful jobs to focus on a different pursuit.

Martha’s Table is one of 10 nonprofit groups to field a team in Washington’s Community Outreach Organization League—a recreational kickball league that gives players a chance to relieve stress, get some exercise, and connect with their peers.

It also gives participants a sense of camaraderie that helps them during the workday.

“I’ve noticed it works easier when you work with the team and do your part, and let the team members do their part,” says Ronald Allen, a Martha’s Table program coordinator and a member of the charity’s kickball squad. “I really love being a part of the team, encouraging coworkers, celebrating after a nice play, and trash-talking opponents.”

To see the players in action, take a look at the video below.

We hope to find other stories of nonprofit workers who gather regularly outside of work. To share your story, post a comment below—or visit our Facebook page.
