Giving on a Middle-Class Paycheck

Wednesday, July 28, at noon U.S. Eastern time

A recent move by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett to cajole their fellow billionaires to give at least 50 percent of their wealth to charity is not a new idea to Jill A. Warren, a nonprofit director and consultant.

Ms. Warren is not a billionaire, or even a millionaire. Yet she and her husband, the Rev. Robert D. Schoenhals, a United Methodist minister, decided more than a decade ago to give 35 to 60 percent of their annual earnings to charity.

Doing so hasn't been easy. When Ms. Warren lost her job, it meant they had to struggle to make ends meet. But it is all part of the couple's commitment to engage in what they like to call "giving beyond our means."

The Chronicle has teamed up with Bolder Giving, an organization that works to encourage philanthropists to give more generously, to develop a series of live online discussions with some of the nation's most interesting philanthropists.

Join us on Wednesday, July 28, at noon U.S. Eastern time for a  discussion with Ms. Warren on why and how she and her husband decided to give away so much of their income to benefit others. Anne Ellinger, a philanthropist and a co-founder of Bolder Giving, will also join the discussion.

You may also join Bolder Giving on Thursday, July 29, for an interactive teleconference with Ms. Warren.

The site and article list conflicting days for the online program. Is it on Wednesday July 28 or Thursday July 29?
