Foundations’ assets grew modestly in 2009, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy's new survey of big grant makers. But grants will still be hard to come by this year, as foundations continue to worry about how much of their wealth was eroded by the stock-market collapse in 2008.
What can nonprofit groups expect from foundations in 2010 and beyond? Has the economy changed the giving philosophies of foundations? If so, how can nonprofit groups position themselves to stand out from the crowd?
Join us on Tuesday, March 23, at noon Eastern time as we discuss those questions and more, plus findings from The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s annual survey of foundations, which will be released on March 22.
The Guests

Joel J. Orosz is a professor of philanthropic studies at Grand Valley State University, in Grand Rapids, Mich. He also directs the Grantmaking School at the university’s Johnson Center for Philanthropy.

In terms of actual giving, if the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) were a foundation, it would be tied at 1st on the list that was presented: $250 million annuallly, all unrestricted.
And in a somewhat startling reversal of roles, there is much less red tape on the back end than there is for most foundation grants. (There's ZERO red tape on the back end).
If you think I'm kidding about this, take a look at the Kellogg Foundation Evaluation Handbook:
http://meera.snre.umich.edu/links-resources/copy_of_how-to-guides-for-conducting-ee-evaluation/general-evaluation-guides/w-k-kellogg-foundation-evaluation-handbook
Then decide how much time you want to spend on reporting how you spent the money that you already spent hundreds of hours applying for!

If you're in the CFC and want to know one key action you should take in April, please send me an e-mail with "CFC Secret" in the subject line. Thanks!
