How the Chronicle’s Survey of Endowments Was Compiled
The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s seventh annual special report on endowments at big foundations, colleges, universities, and charities includes data from 211 organizations.
The total value of the endowments in the study was nearly $298-billion at the end of the groups’ 2009 fiscal years.
The median return on investments in 2009 was minus 9.6 percent. (A median figure means that half of the groups surveyed had higher returns and half lower.)
