The White House and Congress voted this year to restore a tax incentive for older donors who give through their individual retirement accounts. People can give up to $100,000 tax-free from their accounts to charities.

David Shanton, assistant vice president for college advancement at the City University of New York's Baruch College, says the tax incentive gives fundraisers an important talking point when they're working with older donors.

"A lot of donors have said to us that they feel that this is such an easy way to give, and they view it as free money," says Mr. Shanton, who says his organization has received about $1.4-million in IRA gifts.

In this episode of Fundraising Fundamentals, listen to Mr. Shanton tell how to explain the IRA rules to donors.
