Beneficiary: Stanford University

Background: Mr. Clark co-founded Netscape, which created an early web browser; Silicon Graphics, a manufacturer of computer software and hardware; and other technology companies.

Mr. Clark, 69, pledged $60-million to Stanford University’s James H. Clark Center for Biomedical Engineering and Sciences, which he helped the university found in 1999 by providing $90-million. The new gift will support research.

Mr. Clark, who was a professor at Stanford in the 1980s, said in announcing the extra money for the center that he considers the 1999 gift “one of the best things I have ever done.”
