Entrepreneurs who have built their own businesses and corporate executives who are used to running things often want to control every part of their philanthropy, sometimes to the detriment of a charity.
Betsy Mangone, vice president for philanthropic services at the Denver Foundation, worked with one such donor before she joined the foundation. In 1999, she says, she helped a successful businessman create a $3-million charitable remainder trust with stock from his technology company
