David Akers and Levani Lipton are both devoted to helping needy people overseas, but they approach their giving in very different ways.
A former insurance company executive and now a pastor, Mr. Akers devotes about 40 percent of his and his wife's wealth to help those living in poverty. The bulk of the couple's money goes to the large international aid organization CARE. Meanwhile, Ms. Lipton, who traveled to impoverished countries growing up as the daughter of a photojournalist, is executive director of the Ananda Foundation, a small organization that helps poor women and children outside the United States.
What have these two donors learned about helping people in needy parts of the world? And what can nonprofits learn by hearing about the motivations and giving styles of these two donors?
Read the transcript below of the live online discussion sponsored by The Chronicle of Philanthropy and Bolder Giving, an organization that works to encourage philanthropists to give more generously.
