Marketing Deals for Small Charities

Small charities often have a difficult time getting the attention of big companies like the Gap and CVS that run marketing campaigns to benefit charity.

Joe Waters, who oversees cause marketing at Boston Medical Center and writes Selfish Giving, offers ideas to help charities overcome that problem in his most recent post.

On his blog, Mr. Waters regularly highlights interesting charity-corporate marketing deals around the globe and offers tips and ideas to nonprofit fund raisers. In addition, he includes numerous links to articles about charity-corporate marketing deals that have appeared elsewhere online.

Is Yale Playing Tricks With Its Public Disclosure Form?

Dan Prives, an expert on charity finances, found some interesting omissions when he took a look at Yale University’s informational tax returns.

It seems Yale doesn’t properly list its revenue on the form, according to Mr. Prives’ Where Most Needed blog.

Mr. Prives also found that Yale doesn’t list its endowment transactions and doesn’t break down its expenses into basic categories such as program costs, general and administrative spending, and fund-raising expenditures.

“It amazes me that an organization this size can go on so long with a brazenly incomplete Form 990 without someone addressing the issue or other organizations following suit (if it’s legit),” he writes. “It just shows how little attention is paid to Form 990, even by the major players.”

Mr. Prives spent 15 years working with nonprofit organizations on financial reporting and accounting and other related issues.

JetBlue Debacle Offers Lessons for Charities

Charities can learn quite a bit about how to respond to a public-relations crisis from the recent debacle involving JetBlue Airlines, says Nancy E. Schwartz, a nonprofit marketing consultant, in her Getting Attention blog.

During a Valentine’s Day snowstorm, JetBlue kept fliers in some of its planes for more than six hours, while the planes waited for takeoff.

It’s hardly the kind of message a company that prides itself on customer service wants to be sending.

Ms. Schwartz says JetBlue needed to handle the crisis much better to win back the support of customers and beat back the negative press it has generated.

The company did the right thing by accepting responsibility, posting a “Customer Bill of Rights” on its Web site, and having its chief executive deliver a video message via YouTube, she says.
