Former Boston Public Library President Speaks Out About Firing
Bernard Margolis, who was fired as president of the Boston Public Library yesterday after 10 years in the job, spoke out about his dismissal, claiming that politics and government cutbacks marred his tenure, reports The Boston Globe.
Mr. Margolis was especially critical of Thomas M. Menino, Boston’s mayor. He accused the mayor of failing to provide enough money for the city’s 27 branch libraries, of putting pressure on Mr. Margolis to make hiring decisions based on political reasons, and refusing to allow local libraries to be open on Saturdays, which Mr. Margolis believed would help curb youth violence.
Mr. Margolis likened Mr. Menino to a dictator, saying, “I didn’t think this was Venezuela.”
Mr. Menino declined to comment on Mr. Margolis’s remarks.
