French Charity Accused of Smuggling Children

A French charity has been accused of illegally transporting children from Chad into France for adoption, reports the Guardian Unlimited.

Six staff members of the French charity Zoe’s Ark, three journalists, and seven Spanish crew members of a plane hired to take 103 children out of Chad have been detained in Chad.

The charity says that it was trying to save the lives of children orphaned by the crisis in Darfur and place them with French families for adoption. The plane’s crew members insist they had no knowledge of illegal adoptions, saying that the charity told them the children were being flown to France for health reasons.

Idriss Deby Itno, the president of Chad, is seeking severe punishment for those who took part in the plan. The French government has stated that it will not assist the French nationals.
