Google's Philanthropy Supports Geothermal-Energy Research
Google.org, the philanthropic arm of the search-engine company, has announced a $10-million investment in two companies and one university to research and expand the use of geothermal energy as an alternative to coal, according to a press release from the organization’s Web site.
Geothermal energy “has the potential to deliver vast quantities of power 24/7 and be captured nearly anywhere on the planet. And it would be a perfect complement to intermittent sources like solar and wind,” said Dan Reicher, director of Climate and Energy Initiatives at Google.org.
AltaRock Energy and Potter Drilling will get most of the money. The Southern Methodist University Geothermal Lab, in Dallas, will receive a $500,000 grant “to improve understanding of the size and distribution of geothermal-energy resources and to update geothermal mapping of North America.”
