Hewlett Foundation Gives $113-Million to U. of California's Berkeley Campus
A $113-million gift from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation will enable the University of California at Berkeley to create 100 new endowed professorships and provide financial help for graduate students, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The grant is the largest private donation in the university’s history, the newspaper said.
The university will be required to match the sum Hewlett provides over the next seven years.
University officials hope the gift will help the institution retain its top professors amid cuts in state aid and competing offers top scholars have received from private institutions, reports the Los Angeles Times.
