Investor Donates $20-Million to Stem-Cell Research
John Scully, a California investor, and his wife, Regina, have donated $20-million to the Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford Hospital & Clinics for stem-cell research, reports Health News Digest.
Mr. Scully graduated from Stanford School of Business in 1968 and is vice chair of the university’s board of trustees, as well as vice chair of the board of directors for Stanford Hospital.
Beyond his own hopes for what the gift will bring, Mr. Scully also said he was drawn to make the donation because he wanted to counteract the effect of federal restrictions the Bush administration placed on stem-cell research in 2001.
“I don’t believe government should restrict scientific inquiry, especially the way it’s been done — by cutting off funding,” he said. “But that will change. I’m highly confident those federal restrictions will go away. Perhaps gifts like mine will hasten that day by showing the potential for stem-cell therapies.”
