N.Y. Politicians’ Katrina Fund Gave Little to Victims
A charity established by two New York City politicians to help families displaced by Hurricane Katrina has paid out less than 5 percent of the money it has raised, the New York Post reports.
Tax records show New Yorkers to Assist Hurricane Families, set up after the storm by state Sen. Malcolm Smith and U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, both from the borough of Queens, has disbursed $1,392 out of about $31,000 in contributions.
Mr. Meeks said in a statement that donations to the charity were intended "to help sustain displaced evacuees" and that funds were handled by an unidentified director, under advice from a board that comprises local residents. Members of the advisory board told the Post they were not involved in distributing the organization's money.

Are these the same politicians that are so critical of nonprofits for their fund raising and expenditures? One wonders if these two politicians are familiar with the term "fiduciary responsibility."
