Nonprofit Charter-School Groups May Oversee Some D.C. Schools
Michelle A. Rhee, chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools, is mulling bringing in national nonprofit charter-school operators to manage at least 24 of the city’s worst-performing schools, reports The Washington Post.
In a meeting with school leaders, teachers, and parents on Monday, Ms. Rhee said three nonprofit groups are being considered to run some D.C. schools: Green Dot, in Inglewood, Calif.; Mastery Charter Schools, in Philadelphia; and St. Hope, in Sacramento.
Ms. Rhee has links to St. Hope, having served as a board member for about one year before she was hired as chancellor. She also hired teachers for St. Hope when she was chief executive of the New Teacher Project, a nonprofit group in New York that recruits and trains teachers.
