Red Cross Might Relocate Workers in Budget Move
In an attempt to generate revenue, an official at the American Red Cross said the organization might relocate as many as several hundred of its employees from its Washington headquarters to a satellite office housed at the site of its emergency office building at an undisclosed location in Northern Virginia, reports The Washington Post.
Laura Howe, a spokeswoman for the charity, said that relocating employees to the emergency site, which is near Dulles International Airport and maintained for use in the event of an attack on Washington, would open office space at the organization’s headquarters for rental to commercial tenants. The American Red Cross is facing a $200-million deficit this year and has laid off one-third of its 3,000 national employees.
“Knowing that we have a smaller number of staff in the Washington, D.C., area, knowing that we have a need to provide some revenue for the organization, we’re looking at a number of options to house our employees,” said Ms. Howe.
