Washington and Lee U. Receives $100-Million
An anonymous donor has given Washington and Lee University, in Virginia, $100-million, the fourth gift of at least that amount that has gone to higher education in eight days, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The gift is the largest the university has ever received and will be paid out over five years. It will support need-based scholarships, the creation of two professorships, and a program concentrating on “leadership and integrity.”
The donor, whose identity will eventually be revealed, wished to remain anonymous because he wanted attention focused on the school’s graduation ceremonies and the purpose of the gift rather than on him.
Other big gifts in recent days include $100-million each to the University of Chicago and University of Illinois, as well as $105-million to the University of Washington.
