- Giving by text message to the Haiti disaster is a sign that everyday donors are embracing “Philanthropy 2.0,” a faster and more technology-driven era of giving, says David O. Washington, a philanthropy consultant. On the Huffington Post he writes that mobile-phone fund raising still has some obstacles and wonders if wealthy donors and foundations are adapting to this way of operating.
- Charities need to stop considering only the mega-rich as “philanthropists” and instead help usher in an era of “citizen philanthropy,” writes Dan Pallotta on his Harvard Business Review blog. Mr. Pallotta is the founder of a company that raised money for nonprofit groups.

The Chronicle has made it harder to make comments by demanding registration of commenters. Who wants the public’s opinion anyway? Here is Gates Keepers on Melinda’s op-ed: http://gateskeepers.civiblog.org/blog/_archives/2010/2/23/4463848.html#comments

We’ve actually opened up commenting throughout the site. The site now accommodates commenting on every article, multimedia piece, and blog post. In the past, we only had the ability to provide commenting space on our blogs. We are requiring a one-time registration to keep the site free from spam. Once you complete a free (and very short) registration, you are free to comment without any roadblocks. I think you’d agree that comment threads are much better when they are populated by real humans instead of by spambots.
