Acorn Closes Shop in Ohio Under Suit Settlement

March 12, 2010, 7:00 am

The Ohio chapter of the grassroots organizing group Acorn has agreed to give up its state business license under a settlement with a libertarian advocacy group that sued it, reports the Associated Press.

The settlement requires that Ohio Acorn not be reconstituted under another name, as other state and local branches of the nonprofit group have done since it was hit last year with a scandal over undercover videos shot in Acorn offices by conservative activists.

The 1851 Center for Constitutional Law sued Acorn in 2008 over the group’s voter-registration drives, claiming they were based on fraudulent practices that amounted to organized crime. Acorn officials denied any wrongdoing and said they’d planned to close the Ohio office for reasons unrelated to the lawsuit.
