After Mass Shooting, Colorado Probes Suspicious Charity Sites

August 3, 2012, 9:46 am

Police in Aurora, Colo., are investigating a Web site that claims to be raising money for victims of last month’s mass shooting at a local movie theater, writes The Denver Post.

An Aurora police spokesman said the probe was triggered by tips from concerned individuals who spotted the appeal online. He declined to identify the site but said the inquiry is likely to yield criminal charges.

The Colorado Attorney General’s office said it is also looking into some charity sites that have been operating since the shooting, and a Facebook page set up to support the victims is no longer publicizing private parties’ pleas for contributions.

Laura Alier, an administrator for the Aurora Theater Shooting page on the social network, said the page has only a small number of volunteers able to vet solicitations. “We’ve seen a few small cases of suspicious behavior” and have reported them to police, she said.
