Half the literary and trademarks rights to one of the most famous novels in American letters now belong to the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta thanks to a bequest by the nephew of Gone With the Wind author Margaret Mitchell, says the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The gift from the estate of Joseph Mitchell, announced by the diocese Thursday, also includes financial assets valued at $15-million to $20-million and a trove of his aunt’s personal possessions, including first editions of her iconic 1936 book.
The church’s Gone With the Wind stake does not include film rights, which were sold long ago, but could be worth “hundreds of thousands” of dollars a year just for usage of the book in theatrical and other productions, said Steve Swope, a deacon who has been overseeing the gift on behalf of the diocese.
“We hope we can be good, solid stewards of this wonderful literary work,” he said.
