New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s private foundation is donating $50-million to the Sierra Club to back its campaign to eliminate aging coal-fired power plants, The Washington Post reports.
The national environmental group, which has an annual budget of $80-million, will put the Bloomberg Philanthropies funds toward its “Beyond Coal” project, which seeks to close aging coal-fired plants and block construction new ones.
With the federal government failing to enact national legislation on greenhouse-gas emissions, environmental groups are increasingly focusing their energy strategy on state houses and other local efforts.
