The executive board of the Boy Scouts of America put off a scheduled vote Wednesday on a proposal to drop the youth group’s national exclusion of gays as members and troop leaders, saying they would revisit the issue in three months, according to Reuters and The Wall Street Journal.

The board said in a statement that the organization “needs time for a more deliberate review of its membership policy” and will hold discussions with scouting parents and alumni, corporate sponsors, and religious group before putting the matter to a vote of the group’s 1,400-member national council in May.

Coming just seven months after the Boy Scouts reaffirmed the national ban, the plan to cede authority over admitting homosexuals to local Scouts chapters exposed deep rifts within the 103-year-old organization. Gay former scouts have rallied against the ban and some sponsors pulled funding, but the faith groups that dominate scouting largely favor the blanket prohibition and sought this week to delay the vote.
