The British give generously to charity but are far less willing to donate their time, casting doubts on Prime Minister David Cameron’s “Big Society” project to step up citizen involvement in providing services, the Financial Times writes.
A Financial Times/Harris poll of about 6,300 adults in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain found about three-quarters of British residents gave money to a cause in the previous 12 months–the highest figure among the six countries.
But only about one-fourth of British respondents agreed that people should be encouraged to give up time to support health care, education, policing, and other key public services. The survey also found Britons to be less supportive of charity tax breaks than their American and Western European counterparts.
