Calif. Fire Evacuees Give High Marks to Stadium Shelter

October 25, 2007, 1:08 pm

A football stadium that is serving as a shelter for people who have had to flee the fires in Southern California comes complete with massages, diapers, pizza, cots, acupuncture, and Starbucks coffee, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Qualcomm Stadium, in San Diego, has provided shelter to 9,000 people evacuated from their homes, and has offered an abundance of food, services, and volunteers. Most of the items and services have been donated.

It is a very different scene from that of the Louisiana Superdome after the 2005 hurricanes, mostly because those evacuated from the California suburbs are wealthy and have cars, the paper says.

“It’s better service than when you go to a restaurant,” says Gary Potter, a local resident. “Every time you turn around, people are asking us if you need something — water, food, anything.”
