Calif. Fundraising Firms Keep Half of Donations

Commercial fundraisers retained nearly half of the money they raised on behalf of nonprofit groups in California last year, the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times write, citing a study by the state attorney general’s office.

About $173-million of the $338-million raised by professional solicitors in California in 2011, or 51 percent, went to client charities, the first time since the state began reporting such figures that less than half of contributions went to fundraisers’ overhead and profit. However, in two-thirds of the 859 individual campaigns listed in the study, the nonprofit client received less than half of the funds donated.
