A casino lawyer stepped in to help raise money for a group of nuns after the school they taught in for 50 years closed, reports The Wall Street Journal.
The Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, in Barrington, N.J., were uncertain what would happen to them until Timothy Lowry, a N.J. lawyer who specializes in gaming and lottery law, helped rally people to form the Daughters for the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart with the goal of raising enough money to provide for the nuns.
The group has enlisted volunteers and businesses in the area near the school and has raised almost $70,000 to renovate the convent.
Mr. Lowry, who has given the nuns free legal help over the years, acknowledges, “I’m a casino attorney, I’m the least suspecting individual to be associated with nuns.” But, he says, he was raised as a Catholic, and he felt strongly that the women who taught youngsters for so long shouldn’t have to worry about their finances in retirement.
