Celebrities Embrace Health Causes

November 22, 2006, 1:46 pm

The increasing number of celebrities who advocate for certain diseases can attract millions of dollars for research and raise awareness, but doctors warn against taking health advice from actors, reports Forbes Magazine.

“There’s a better place to [turn] than someone just writing a book and promoting all these different ways of doing things,” said Oleg Bess, an obstetrician and gynecologist in Beverly Hills, Calif.

But some celebrities who suffer from an illness—such as Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson’s disease—help finance research and inform the public, the article said. The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research has doled out $85-million to research efforts.
