Charities Take Steps to Ensure Safety of Donated Toys

December 4, 2007, 1:04 pm

Due to the millions of Chinese-made toys recalled this year, charities across the country are receiving donated toys with caution, reports the Associated Press.

The U.S. Marines are inspecting donations received for their annual Toys for Tots drive. Charities like Goodwill Industries International and the Salvation Army are either refusing toy donations or devoting more time to inspecting the items before they are distributed.

About 150 Salvation Army thrift stores in the South have stopped accepting toy donations because of the recalls, according to Melissa Temme, national spokeswoman for the charity. Goodwill doesn’t have a national policy regarding toy donations, said its national spokeswoman, Christine Nyirjesy Bragale, who added that each local affiliate sets its own policy, and that all toys are inspected against recall lists.
