A nonprofit payroll supervisor, accused of stealing $1.3-million from her employer, says she used the money in part to pay for medical bills and her daughter’s wedding, reports the Associated Press.

Linda Bevins, who has colon and lung cancer, was fired in June from the Crotched Mountain Foundation, which operates a health-rehabilitation center in New Hampshire. Now the charity is suing Ms. Bevins, her husband, and their daughter, and a criminal investigation is under way.

“My daughter was getting married; I wanted her to have a nice wedding,” Ms. Bevins says. “I had nothing, it all went to cancer. I thought I was going to die. I wanted to have a good life. I wanted my husband to have peace of mind.”

She began taking money from the organization in 2004 when doctors told her that the cancer had spread, Ms. Bevins says, adding that neither her husband nor her daughter knew about the theft.
