California governor and millionaire Arnold Schwarzenegger bills much of his overseas travel — including trips on private jets and stays at hotel suites that cost thousands of dollars a night — to the California State Protocol Foundation, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Donations to the charity are tax deductible, and the organization, unlike political groups, is not required to disclose its list of donors, the newspaper says.

Nonprofit watchdog groups criticized the practice of using charitable write-offs to pay for high-end travel for a government official, adding that the charity, which is closely associated with the California Chamber of Commerce, could be a way for corporate donors and others to curry favor with the governor.

Representatives for Mr. Schwarzenegger and the charity say there is nothing inappropriate about the travel arrangement.
