Charity Work Becomes a Growing Priority for Law Students Worldwide

November 22, 2010, 12:34 pm

Doing pro bono work is increasingly on the agenda for law students around the world, who value both the social dimension and the added skills that come with providing free legal services to needy clients, the Financial Times writes.

More than 30 law schools in the United Kingdom are now operating advice clinics, according to the British charity legal-services charity LawWorks, while in the United States many schools are asking students to keep a log of their pro bono hours.

“The Generation Y lawyers really want this dimension” said José Maria Areilza, dean of IE Business School, in Madrid. “Prospective students now ask at interviews, ‘What is your position on pro bono work?’ Five years ago, they would never have asked that question.”
