Chinese aid organizations are warning that new government regulations on donations from abroad could cut deeply into their fund raising and put many nonprofit groups out of business, the Associated Press reports.
As of this month, nongovernmental Chinese aid groups must show proof that foreign donors are registered in their home countries, and they must strictly follow detailed agreements with those overseas entities.
The number of aid groups is rapidly growing in China. Past government actions, such as last month’s order to Chinese universities to sever ties with Oxfam, have signaled Beijing’s concern with foreign donors’ motives for giving.
