Chinese Red Cross Pushes Branches to Disclose Finances

July 22, 2011, 9:48 am

Rocked by a series of controversies over its spending, the Red Cross Society of China is urging its chapters to demonstrate greater financial transparency, says the Malaysian news service Bernama.

In an online statement, the charity said branches should make public information about gifts, allocation of donated funds, and spending on vehicles, travel, and other items, with contributors able to check the information the day after giving.

Chinese confidence in the society–which belongs to the international Red Cross but is run by the Chinese government–has taken hits in recent months over a government audit that alleged overspending and misuse of funds and a scandal involving a young woman who posted photos of her lavish way of life online while saying she worked for a Red Cross-affiliated organization.
