Colo. Charity Calendar Organizer Charged With $243,000 Theft

June 13, 2012, 10:19 am

A Colorado woman has been charged with stealing $243,000 from a children’s charity she created that sold calendars featuring handsome firefighters, Denver television station KMGH reports.

Kirsten Hamling, 47, surrendered to police Tuesday, one day after she was charged with felony theft, charitable fraud, and other offenses. Bond was set at $10,000.

Ms. Hamling founded Fired Up for Kids in 2004 to raise money for the Children’s Hospital Colorado burn unit by selling the firefighter calendars. Prosecutors allege that in 2005 she began diverting the organization’s proceeds to her own use, paying for travel, private-school tuition for her children, and other personal expenses.

Ms. Hamling resigned from the charity in September 2011.
