Colo. Charity Head Gets Probation for $250,000 Theft

December 21, 2012, 11:04 am

The founder of a Colorado children’s charity who admitted to stealing from the organization was sentenced Thursday to 10 years of probation and ordered to pay more than $250,000 in restitution, reports the Denver Post.

Kristen Hamling led Fired Up for Kids, which raised money for the burn unit at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Prosecutors said that starting in 2004, a year after she launched the charity, Ms. Hamling began diverting its money to personal uses, including airline tickets, car repairs, and private-school tuition for her children. She was arrested in June and pleaded guilty in September.
