William H. Gross, founder and chief investment officer at the Pacific Investment Management Company, in Newport Beach, Calif., and his wife, Sue, have made a $10-million gift to the University of California at Irvine to support stem-cell research, reports the university.

Of the gift, $2-million will be allocated to support the Stem Cell Research Center at the university. The remaining $8-million is part of a matching gift to help construct a proposed facility that will house stem-cell research.

The Grosses were ranked No. 27 on The Chronicle’s annual survey of America’s most-generous donors in 2005.
