Crisis in Syria Cuts Into Islamic Charities’ Aid to Gaza

Syria’s civil conflict is casting a long financial shadow over the Gaza Strip as Islamic charities redirect aid to the war-torn country, reports the Associated Press.

Nonprofits in Gaza say they are scaling back programs as donations decline. “The Syria crisis has affected aid to the poor in Gaza. Our donors in the Gulf and in Europe told me clearly they have shifted part of their aid to Syria,” said Abdel Qader al-Attar of the Islamic Charity, the largest such group in the area.

Gaza took another financial blow when Iran reduced monthly cash transfers to Hamas, the militant group that rules the territory, over its refusal to back Syrian President Bashar Assad in the war, according to officials with Hamas and Islamic aid groups.
