Managers at the Washington Family Emergency Shelter told D.C. Council members Wednesday that two employees were fired last month for soliciting or having sex with female residents of the facility, The Washington Post reports.
The misconduct allegations, previously disclosed to D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty were among numerous problems at city homeless shelters discussed at a seven-hour hearing of the council’s Human Services Committee. Officials with Families Forward, the nonprofit organization that runs the shelter under a $2.5-million city contract, said they erred in not reporting the matter to District officials after residents complained in early March.
Catholic Charities, of Washington, which runs the Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter, said Wednesday that it fired an employee after he was charged with drug dealing, The Post reports.
Howard R. Barnes, a maintenance worker, was arrested last month after allegedly selling heroin to undercover police officers at the facility and at his apartment in nearby Capitol Heights, Md.
