Desperation for food and water has led to numerous raids on charity trucks and relief stations near the epicenter of the massive earthquake in Peru that killed hundreds and left tens of thousands homeless, reports The Washington Post.
Governments and private organizations have pledged $40-million in aid, the newspaper said.
But the 8.0-magnitude quake buckled roads along the important Pan-American Highway on Peru’s coast, which stalled trucks bringing supplies.
To speed up relief efforts, airdrops of aid packages will begin soon. And to control unrest in the meantime, Peru’s president has dispatched troops to the area, which has three substantial-size cities.
