Ex-Council Member in N.Y. Gets 5 Years for Charities Fraud

Larry B. Seabrook, a former member of the New York City Council, was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for steering hundreds of thousands of dollars in municipal funds to charities controlled by his associates, reports The New York Times.

The longtime Bronx leader, who also served in the state Assembly and Senate during a three-decade political career, was also ordered to pay $620,000 in restitution to the city. His attorneys said he would appeal both his conviction and the sentencing.

Mr. Seabrook was found guilty in July of orchestrating a scheme to funnel City Council discretionary funds to friends, relatives, and a girlfriend through a network of nonprofit groups. Speaking briefly at the sentencing, he said he had been betrayed by people he brought in to run the charities who “did not do what they were supposed to do.”
