A former financial director of a New York chapter of the American Red Cross was sentenced Wednesday to 28 months to seven years in prison for stealing more than $274,000 from the relief charity, the Associated Press reports.
Deborah Leggio pleaded guilty to grand larceny more than a year ago but sentencing was delayed to give her time to make restitution. Doing so could have brought a more lenient sentence under a plea deal, but prosecutors said she has repaid only $9,500.
Ms. Leggio admitted repeatedly using an ATM card belonging to the Suffolk County Red Cross office from 2005 to 2009 to withdraw money from the charity’s account. Prosecutors said used the funds for nail treatments, a Weight Watchers membership, her children’s tuition, and other personal items.Return to Top
