Ex-Penn State Coach’s Charity to Sell Site of Abandoned Project

January 17, 2012, 9:53 am

The charity founded by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky announced plans to sell a 60-acre property where it had been building an educational and recreational center for underprivileged youths, reports the Associated Press.

The Second Mile began construction on the Center for Excellence in Bellefonte, Pa., last year but canceled the project two months ago. The state put on hold a $3-million grant for the center after Mr. Sandusky was charged in early November with molesting boys he met through the charity he established in 1977.

In a written statement, the Second Mile said selling the property was a key step in efforts to preserve its youth programs, but it did not reveal a price tag. In a recent court filing the organization listed $3.3-million worth of real estate among its assets.

Mr. Sandusky, who in the Second Mile’s 2008 annual report described the prospective Bellefonte complex as the charity’s permanent future home, has denied charges that he sexually abused 10 boys over a 15-year period and is out on bail pending trial.
