The Miami-based Buoniconti Fund, which raises money for research into paralysis and spinal-cord injuries, received a $25-million donation at its annual fundraiser in Bal Harbour, Fla., writes The Miami Herald. Christine E. Lynn, the widow of South Florida insurance magnate Eugene Lynn, stood up in the middle of the gala dinner to make the pledge, spurring a flurry of $1-million promises.

Over all, the event raised $31-million for the fund, named Marc Buoniconti, the paralyzed son of former Miami Dolphins football star Nick Buoniconti.
