Foundations to Support Only Environmentally Friendly Construction

April 9, 2007, 2:06 pm

Two Cleveland area foundations, the Gund Foundation and the Cleveland Foundation, said that they would begin awarding construction grants only to building or renovation projects that are deemed environmentally friendly, reports the Associated Press.

David Abbott, executive director of the Gund Foundation, said both organizations wanted to make a statement amid the heightened concern about global climate change.

By deciding to go green when they put up a new building or improve an existing one, nonprofit groups can not only help the environment, but also save money on energy and maintenance, said John Mitterholzer, of the Cleveland Foundation.
